Gum disease (periodontitis) is one of the most common dental health issues, but it’s also completely preventable and treatable. Gum disease develops in stages. The earliest form is gingivitis, which occurs when plaque begins to cause inflammation that is only affecting the gums. If you fail to remove plaque, it hardens into calculus (tartar buildup) that solidifies onto the base of the tooth. Unlike plaque, tartar can’t be removed with brushing and flossing, it can only be removed with instruments at the dentist’s office.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling removes plaque and calculus from the teeth and beneath the gum line to eliminate troublesome bacteria. Scaling and Root Planing is often completed in 2 visits to focus on one half of the mouth at a time. This ensures all the- calculus is thoroughly removed. Anesthesia is also used for patient comfort, this can be a traditional injected anesthetic or a needle-less gel anesthesia placed around the gums.

Periodontal Splinting

In cases of advanced periodontal disease where there has been recession of bone around the tooth a periodontal splint may be recommended. In this situation the bone loss causes the teeth to lose their support at which point they start becoming mobile (loose). A periodontal splint is placed to stabilize the teeth in a non surgical manner

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the early signs of gum disease (periodontitis)?

Early signs often include red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, and gum recession. Many people do not notice symptoms right away, which is why regular dental visits are so important.

Q: How does scaling and root planning help treat gum disease?

Scaling and root planning is a deep dental cleaning used to treat gum disease, specifically periodontitis. While a regular cleaning focuses on the visible parts of your teeth, this non-surgical procedure reaches deep beneath the gumline to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar that have built up in “pockets” between the teeth and gums.

Q: Is periodontal treatment painful or uncomfortable?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during treatment. Local anesthesia, topical anesthesia, nitrous oxide sedation and modern techniques help make the process as comfortable as possible.

Q: How many visits are required for periodontal therapy?

The number of visits depends on how advanced the gum disease is. Mild cases may need fewer appointments, while more complex cases may require up to 2-3 appointments to allow thorough removal of all bacteria. All periodontal therapies require follow-up maintenance over time.

Q: What happens if gum disease is left untreated?

Untreated gum disease can lead to tooth loss, jawbone damage, and other health complications. Early care can help prevent more serious and costly treatment later.
