Single Tooth Implants
Single tooth dental implants replace individual tooth roots in the mouth. Implants provide the base for a dental crown to be placed as a replacement of the missing tooth. The presence of a dental implant preserves bone loss in the immediate area surrounding the implant.
Implant Bridge
Like a dental bridge, an implant bridge utilizes two implants spaced apart to replace multiple missing teeth. This is a more cost effective option to replace three or more missing teeth while only having two implants placed
Implant Supported Dentures
For patients who are missing many or all of their teeth, implant supported dentures are an alternative to traditional (gum supported) dentures. This option requires the placement of two or more implants. In order to replace a full arch denture, a minimum of four implants is ideal. The denture is held firmly in place by the implants via a gasket called locators which are embedded into the denture. The locators lock into place allowing the implants to provide optimal retention of the denture.
Implant eligibility depends on several factors. Overall systemic health, presence of periodontal disease, bone volume and density all determine the possibility of implants.
Frequently Asked Questions
Dental implants are a long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. A titanium post is placed in the jawbone, where it functions like a natural tooth root and supports a custom crown restoration. Implant surgery typically takes about 30 minutes, after which the area is left to heal for approximately 4 months. After this healing period a crown can be placed on the implant to mimic a fully functional tooth.
Many healthy adults with strong gums and adequate bone support may qualify for implants. Requirements for implants include sufficient bone volume and density, healthy gums, good systemic health, being a non smoker. Certain medications also impact long term success of implants.
With proper care, dental implants can last for many years and often serve as a long-term or permanent tooth replacement option. Factors that shorten lifespan of an implant include poor oral hygiene, being a smoker, certain habits such as teeth grinding, uncontrolled health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
Implants usually offer better stability, comfort, and function than removable dentures. The right choice depends on your oral health, goals, and treatment preferences. Implants usually take longer to complete from start to finish than dentures, but also typically last a lifetime unlike dentures.
The procedure is typically done with anesthesia, so most patients feel very little during treatment. Some mild soreness afterward is normal and usually manageable.
