When the structure of a tooth has sustained significant damage or has been weakened through cavities or a root canal treatment, a dental crown is needed to enhance the long term prognosis of the tooth.
The first step in getting a crown is conservatively preparing the tooth that has been damaged. After we’ve prepared the tooth, an impression of your tooth is taken, these impressions are sent to a dental laboratory. We work with cutting edge laboratories that create your custom dental crowns to fit your smile perfectly, matching your natural teeth in shape, size, and color.
A temporary crown is then made at the office and is placed on the tooth to protect it while your permanent crown is being fabricated. Typically two weeks later your permanent crown will be ready, you will come back to our office to have it placed. When we’re sure that it fits properly, we bond or cement the crown onto the prepared tooth. An x-ray will be taken to ensure the crown is properly seated and there are no gaps and openings between the crown and the tooth. With proper care and oral hygiene, your crown may last a lifetime.
We use dental crowns in the following situations:
- Restore broken, fractured, and/or grossly decayed teeth
- Enhance esthetics
- Replace large failing or fractured fillings
- Protect teeth that have recently received a root canal
- Restore a dental implant

Ceramic Crowns
Ceramic crowns are often used for teeth that are visible when you smile, as they are made from tooth-colored porcelain and have a natural appearance. Ceramic crowns are used in esthetic areas as well as for patients with metal allergies or who prefer metal-free restorations.
Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns
This type of restoration has a metal substructure with tooth-colored porcelain laid over the top. These crowns have the strength and durability of metal with the aesthetics of ceramic, making it a great choice for any tooth.
Gold Crowns
Gold alloys are the strongest and longest lasting material available for crowns. They are often used for molars as they allow the dentist to remove the least amount of tooth structure during crown preparation.
